How long can potato soup sit out? - potato pots

I just re-heated a pot of soup with potatoes, only to discover when he was sitting the whole day for ten hours. I ate not much, but enough to worry that he might be ill. Does anybody know it when we get sick sitting so long? I warmed up with salt in it ....
